I coxed a little for one of my university crews when I was much (much) younger and it was partly my memories of early mornings on the river that inspired this book. There are a whole set of sounds and smells that come with a boathouse at dawn and I wanted to try and reflect some of that in the settings for Stroke Rate.
Competitive rowers have to be dedicated, almost obsessive in their drive for fitness and technique. That strength of character is reflected in both Ben and Lucian, though in different ways. The book was a pleasure to write and it's another story I'd like to do a sequel to sometime in the future.
